We Were Young…

“We were young and we were in love… “

This is the first line of many love stories that turn out with a less than desirable ending.  While there is an exception to every rule, we do not consider ourselves exceptions.  While these are the first words of our love story also, a couple of words have been left out.

“We were young and we were in love with Him.”

Before we met.  Before we sat together in church.  Before we began our friendship with each other something burned in our hearts for Someone else.  Our love story starts before we met.

I was sixteen when I fell in love with God.  Katie was fourteen.  We met the following year when my family started attending the church where Katie’s family was attending.

We had been there about two weeks when I asked Katie to sit with me in the front row at church.  She said that I had to ask her dad.  Her dad was sitting in the last row with his arms crossed.  He had only daughters.  His fatherly radar I’m sure was getting signals loud and clear that one of his daughters was being tracked.  I was too young and dumb to have been intimidated and so I walked up to him and asked him and he said, “I guess so”.  That was September 10, 1995.  I was 17.  Katie was 15.  Our love story with each other had begun.

I never really considered getting to know someone else.  Neither one of us were proponents of the dating game.  We still aren’t today.

We never talked of marriage in the three years leading up to our engagement.  I always deflected questions with the answer, “I’m going to be a monk.”

Well, it was more of a challenge asking her father for her hand in marriage.  I was 20 at that time.  We were engaged on December 28, 1998.  We planned our wedding for Friday, August 13, 1999.

Here we are 11 children later, living out our love for each other in the framework of living out our love for Him.

God has a unique plan for each one of us.  Suffering is a part of living and growing.  Some people complain and bellyache.  You know, the “woe is me” people.  Well, there may be a thing or two in the Bible about joyfulness.  Having 11 kids has not been a piece of cake for Katie, you know.  We are pro-life but it does not come naturally nor has it been easy.  You can try to find the easy way out, but you’ll get yours.  Having a big family – hard, painful, inconvenient and totally worth it!

We live in eastern Europe and have for the last twelve years.  We have done a quite a bit of traveling.  We enjoy hiking, camping, sports, reading, music, and a bunch of other stuff.  This page is dedicated to our stories as a family.
